I was born and bred in Enfield, growing up in the 70s and 80s, going to Lavender School, Chase Side Primary and Enfield Grammar School, before starting work as a very young estate agent in Chase Side in the mid 1980s. While, like most towns around London, it’s now become part of the metropolis, I have always been struck by how green this historic town is, being the northern most borough of London and the gateway to the rolling Hertfordshire countryside.
Long before Enfield became the vibrant North London borough we know today, it was a quiet market town surrounded by woodlands, fields, with the occasional Tudor monarch dropping by for a visit. It has come a long way since then, but its mix of history, green spaces, and modern conveniences makes it one of the best places to live for young professionals and families alike.
A Stroll Through Time
Enfield’s story stretches back thousands of years. The Romans were among the first to settle here, drawn to the area by its strategic location along Ermine Street, the ancient road linking London to York. By the time the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, Enfield was already an established village with a church, farmland, and even a mill.
It was during the Tudor period that Enfield became a playground for royalty. Henry VIII loved hunting in the forests here (Enfield Chase) and often visited Elsynge Palace, which once stood where Forty Hall is today. In fact, in 1558, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I) was staying in Enfield when she received the life-changing news that she had become Queen of England. Just imagine… one of the most famous rulers in history found out she had landed the top job while hanging out in Enfield!
The industrial revolution and the arrival of the railway in the 19th century transformed Enfield from a rural market town into a thriving suburb. The Royal Small Arms Factory, established in Enfield Lock, produced the famous Lee-Enfield rifle, a weapon used by British soldiers for decades. But it wasn’t all about industry, Enfield also became known for its community spirit, green spaces, and bustling high streets.
Why Enfield is a fantastic place to live today
Fast forward to the present, and Enfield has cemented itself as one of North London’s most desirable areas. But what makes it so special? For me, I think it’s like the Goldilocks of towns, offering just the right balance of bustling vibrancy and laid-back vibes and space to unwind.
It has brilliant transport links Whether you’re commuting to work in Central London or heading out for a weekend adventure, Enfield’s transport options make life easy. With fast trains from Enfield Town, Enfield Chase, and Southbury stations, plus the Piccadilly Line at Oakwood and Cockfosters, you can be in the heart of London in under 30 minutes. An excellent road network and easy access to Jct 25 M25 (Enfield) makes getting further afield simple.
Green-spaces galore One of Enfield’s biggest draws is its abundance of parks and open spaces. From the sprawling Trent Park (perfect for picnics, dog walks, golf and horse riding) to Forty Hall’s stunning gardens, there’s no shortage of greenery to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Shop ‘til you drop (and then some!) Enfield is a shopper’s paradise, offering everything from high-street favourites to quirky independent boutiques. Palace Gardens in Enfield Town provides a mix of big-name brands and everyday essentials, while nearby Southgate, Winchmore Hill, and Cockfosters boast charming independent shops, delis, restaurants and stylish homeware stores
Enfield’s retail parks offer a fantastic selection of major retailers, including TK Maxx, Next, Currys, and Boots, along with large home improvement stores like B&Q and Dunelm – ideal for sprucing up your space.
Leisure & Entertainment Enfield isn’t just about shopping, it’s also packed with things to do. Cineworld offers the latest blockbuster films, while the Odeon Luxe in Lee Valley is perfect for those who love the VIP cinema experience with luxurious reclining seats. Hollywood Bowl offers bowling fun for all ages, while Jump In Trampoline Park is perfect for burning off energy (kids and adults alike!). If fitness is your thing, there are numerous gyms and health clubs, including David Lloyd Enfield, PureGym, and Southbury Leisure Centre, offering state-of-the-art facilities and a range of classes. Enfield is packed with great sports facilities too, catering for everyone from casual gym-goers to serious athletes. Whether you’re into football, rugby, cricket, tennis, swimming, golf, martial arts or something more adventurous, like white-water rafting, there’s something for everyone!
Great schools and family-friendly vibes Enfield is packed with outstanding schools, both primary and secondary, making it a top choice for families looking to settle down. The sense of community is strong, with plenty of activities for kids, from sports clubs to theatre groups.
Thriving Food & Drink scene Whether you fancy a cosy pub, a trendy coffee shop, or international cuisine, Enfield has something to offer. The town centre has seen a rise in independent cafes and restaurants, while nearby Winchmore Hill and Southgate boast fantastic eateries and lively gastropubs.
Affordable (by London standards!) Compared to other parts of North London, Enfield offers more space for your money. Whether you’re looking for a stylish flat in Enfield Town or a family-friendly house in Bush Hill Park, there are plenty of options without breaking the bank.
A Mix of Old and New Enfield perfectly blends historical charm with modern convenience. You can wander past medieval churches, visit stately homes, and then pop into a trendy coworking space or gym. The borough is constantly evolving while staying true to its roots.
From its Tudor past to its 21st-century vibrancy, Enfield remains one of North London’s hidden gems. Whether you’re a young professional looking for a well-connected, lively area or a family seeking space and great schools, Enfield has it all—plus a little bit of history to impress your friends with at the pub!
